I paint ideas. My paintings read as colorful abstracts from a distance; on closer inspection they reveal symbolic and metaphorical narratives. I am fortunate to be a synesthete – synesthesia is a benign neurological crossing of wires causing the stimulation of one sense to evoke another. For me, each letter and number has a unique hue; words also have colorful auras. Recently I have been painting a series about the history of the alphabet. Starting with the letter’s color, I explore its early forms and associations. The result is a painting with a richly layered complex surface that can be appreciated on many levels. My style lends itself very well to corporate identity art.

“Whence did the wond’rous mystic art arise , of painting speech and speaking to the eyes,

that we by tracing magic lines are taught how to embody and to color thought?”

~ William Massey
